Understanding TBC DPS Scaling
The Burning Crusade DPS meta is fundamentally shaped by gear scaling. Unlike later expansions where balance is tighter, TBC has dramatic power shifts between raid tiers. If you're new to TBC, check our talent system guide first. The two main factors are:
1. Stat Scaling: Classes that benefit more from spell power, attack power, crit, and haste gain more from better gear. Destruction Warlocks, for instance, double-dip on crit through the Ruin talent (200% crit damage on Shadow Bolt), making each point of crit exponentially more valuable.
2. Fight Duration: Short fights favor burst classes (Arcane Mages, BM Hunters), while long fights favor sustained damage (Destruction Warlocks, Combat Rogues). As bosses get more health in later tiers, sustained DPS classes naturally climb the rankings.
T4 DPS Rankings: Karazhan, Gruul's Lair, Magtheridon
S-Tier: ⢠Beast Mastery Hunter (41/20/0) ā The undisputed king of T4 DPS. The Beast Within + Serpent's Swiftness give BM Hunters the highest damage before gear scaling tips the balance. Pet contributes ~30% of total damage, and the rotation is simple. ⢠Destruction Warlock DS/Ruin (0/21/40) ā Already strong in T4, though doesn't fully shine until T5+ gear.
A-Tier: ⢠Arcane Fire Mage (40/21/0) ā Excellent burst on Karazhan's many short fights. Arcane Power windows delete bosses during execute phases. ⢠Affliction Warlock (41/0/20) ā Strong consistent DPS with less gear dependency. Essential for the Malediction debuff. ⢠Shadow Priest (13/0/48) ā Moderate personal DPS but provides irreplaceable mana return via Vampiric Touch.
B-Tier: ⢠Combat Rogue (20/41/0) ā Solid but weapon-dependent. Needs good sword drops to compete. ⢠Fury Warrior (17/44/0) ā Struggles with rage generation in T4 gear. Gets significantly better later. ⢠Enhancement Shaman (0/41/20) ā Good utility but personal DPS is middle-of-the-pack. ⢠Elemental Shaman (40/21/0) ā Totem of Wrath is valuable but personal DPS is below pure DPS classes.
T5 DPS Rankings: Serpentshrine Cavern, Tempest Keep
S-Tier: ⢠Destruction Warlock DS/Ruin (0/21/40) ā Begins to overtake Hunters as the Shadow Bolt spam rotation scales with T5 spell power and crit. Ruin crits become devastating. ⢠Beast Mastery Hunter (41/20/0) ā Still top tier but the gap with Warlocks narrows.
A-Tier: ⢠Arcane Fire Mage (40/21/0) ā Strong burst remains relevant on fights like Void Reaver and Al'ar. Mana issues become manageable with T5 set bonuses. ⢠Deep Fire Mage (11/48/2) ā Emerges as competitive on longer fights where Ignite and Combustion can fully ramp. ⢠Combat Rogue (20/41/0) ā Blade Flurry shines on multi-target encounters. T5 weapons significantly boost DPS. ⢠Affliction Warlock (41/0/20) ā Remains strong and is preferred when your raid needs the debuff package.
B-Tier: ⢠Survival Hunter (0/21/40) ā Expose Weakness becomes increasingly valuable as melee DPS scales with attack power. ⢠Fury Warrior (17/44/0) ā Finally gets enough rage from T5 weapons to perform. Strong on Haste-buffed fights. ⢠Retribution Paladin (0/10/51) ā Sanctity Aura and Judgements justify the raid spot. Personal DPS is respectable.
T6 DPS Rankings: Black Temple, Hyjal Summit, Sunwell Plateau
S-Tier: ⢠Destruction Warlock DS/Ruin (0/21/40) ā The clear #1 DPS in the game. With T6 gear, Ruin crits reach absurd numbers. Shadow Bolt spam with Improved Shadow Bolt uptime delivers unmatched sustained damage. ⢠Arcane Fire Mage (40/21/0) ā Arcane Power + PoM + trinket stacking creates the highest burst windows in the game. Competes with Warlocks on shorter Sunwell encounters.
A-Tier: ⢠Beast Mastery Hunter (41/20/0) ā Still strong, but pet survivability becomes an issue on complex Sunwell mechanics. Some Hunters swap to Survival. ⢠Deep Fire Mage (11/48/2) ā Excellent on long Sunwell fights. Ignite rolling on Brutallus is peak Mage gameplay. ⢠Combat Rogue (20/41/0) ā Warglaives of Azzinoth give Combat Rogues a massive spike. One of the best melee DPS classes in full T6 BIS. ⢠Fury Warrior (17/44/0) ā With T6 weapons and world buffs, Fury becomes a top melee DPS option.
B-Tier: ⢠Survival Hunter (0/21/40) ā Expose Weakness at high agility values provides massive raid DPS gain even though personal DPS is lower. ⢠Arms Warrior (33/28/0) ā Blood Frenzy (4% physical damage) justifies the slot in physical-heavy raids. ⢠Enhancement Shaman (0/41/20) ā Windfury + Unleashed Rage are essential for the melee group. Personal DPS is secondary to the buff package.
Class Stacking in TBC Raids
Understanding DPS rankings helps with raid composition. A typical optimized 25-man TBC raid might stack DPS as follows:
⢠4-5 Warlocks (mix of Destruction and one Affliction for debuffs) ⢠2-3 Hunters (mostly BM, one Survival for Expose Weakness) ⢠2-3 Mages (Arcane Fire or deep Fire depending on fight length) ⢠1-2 Rogues (Combat Swords if good weapons available) ⢠1 Shadow Priest (essential for caster group mana return) ⢠1 Enhancement Shaman (melee group buffs) ⢠1 Elemental Shaman (caster group Totem of Wrath) ⢠1 Fury or Arms Warrior (Arms for Blood Frenzy, Fury for raw DPS) ⢠1 Retribution Paladin (Sanctity Aura and Judgements) ⢠0-1 Balance Druid (Moonkin Aura for caster group) ⢠0-1 Feral Cat Druid (if they have strong DPS gear and can off-tank)
The exact composition varies by guild strategy, but the pattern is clear: TBC raids heavily favor ranged DPS (Warlock > Hunter > Mage) while ensuring one of each unique buff/debuff class is present.
How to Improve Your DPS Regardless of Class
No matter which class you play, these universal tips help maximize your DPS in TBC. Use our TBC Talent Calculator to optimize your build for maximum output:
1. Hit Rating Cap: Reaching your spell or melee hit cap is the single biggest DPS gain. For casters, this is 16% spell hit (202 rating) against level 73 bosses, reducible by talents and debuffs.
2. Consumables: TBC raiding expects full consumable usage ā Flask of Pure Death/Blinding Light/Relentless Assault, food buffs, weapon oils/poisons, and Destruction/Haste potions during combat.
3. Rotation Discipline: TBC rotations are simpler than modern WoW but require consistency. A Warlock who Shadow Bolts perfectly for 5 minutes will outdamage one who clips casts or moves unnecessarily.
4. Downranking: Healers should master downranking (using lower-rank spells for mana efficiency). DPS classes generally use max rank abilities.
5. Threat Management: TBC has real threat. Warlocks use Soulshatter, Mages use Invisibility, and tanks need lead time. Pulling aggro means death.
