The 9 Classes at a Glance
TBC features 9 playable classes, each with three talent specializations. You can plan builds for all of them using our TBC Talent Calculator. Here's a quick overview:
⢠Warrior ā The classic tank and melee fighter. Best main tank, strong PvP, decent DPS. ⢠Paladin ā Hybrid holy warrior. Best AoE tank, best single-target healer, viable melee DPS. ⢠Hunter ā Ranged physical DPS with a pet. Top early-tier damage, simple rotation, great for beginners. ⢠Rogue ā Stealth melee DPS. Dominant in PvP, strong raid DPS, high skill ceiling. ⢠Priest ā The most versatile healer. Holy for AoE healing, Shadow for DPS + mana utility. ⢠Shaman ā Totems and Heroism. Most desired class in TBC raids for group buffs. ⢠Mage ā Pure ranged DPS. Burst damage, crowd control, portals, food/water creation. ⢠Warlock ā DoT/Shadow caster DPS. Highest sustained DPS in late TBC, excellent PvP survivability. ⢠Druid ā Shape-shifting hybrid. Can tank, heal, melee DPS, or ranged DPS ā the ultimate flex pick.
Choose by Role: What Do You Want to Do?
If You Want to Tank: ⢠Protection Warrior ā Best overall main tank. Has the deepest defensive toolkit (Shield Wall, Last Stand, Spell Reflect). Accepted everywhere. ⢠Protection Paladin ā Best AoE tank. Dominates heroic dungeons. Can main tank most raid bosses. Extremely fun to play. ⢠Feral Druid ā Most versatile tank. Can switch between tanking and DPS by changing gear, using the same spec. Highest health pool.
If You Want to Heal: ⢠Restoration Shaman ā Most desired healer. Chain Heal is broken, Heroism is mandatory, Mana Tide saves raids. ⢠Holy Paladin ā Best single-target healer. If you enjoy keeping one person alive through massive hits, this is your class. ⢠Holy Priest ā Most versatile healer. Can AoE heal (Circle of Healing) or single-target heal depending on the fight. ⢠Restoration Druid ā HoT-based healing. Unique playstyle of rolling Rejuvenation and Lifebloom on multiple targets.
If You Want to DPS (Ranged): ⢠Warlock ā Highest sustained DPS in the game from T5 onwards. Extremely durable in PvP. Always in high raid demand. ⢠Hunter ā Highest DPS in T4. Simple rotation (steady shot weaving). Pet management adds depth. ⢠Mage ā Highest burst DPS. Great at AoE. Essential raid utility (food, water, crowd control). ⢠Shadow Priest ā Moderate personal DPS but provides irreplaceable mana return to the party. ⢠Balance Druid ā Niche but valued for Moonkin Aura (5% spell crit to party). Fun if you like caster druids. ⢠Elemental Shaman ā Solid caster DPS with Totem of Wrath and Heroism.
If You Want to DPS (Melee): ⢠Rogue ā Pure melee assassin. Highest melee DPS potential. Dominant PvP class. ⢠Fury Warrior ā Dual-wield berserker. Scales well late game. Straightforward playstyle. ⢠Enhancement Shaman ā Melee hybrid. Windfury procs are thrilling. Essential melee group support. ⢠Feral Cat Druid ā Competitive melee DPS with tanking backup capability. ⢠Retribution Paladin ā Melee DPS with raid utility. One slot per raid. Satisfying burst.
Choose by Difficulty: How Hard Is Each Class?
Beginner-Friendly (Easy to learn, effective quickly): ⢠Hunter ā Simple rotation, pet tanks for you while leveling, forgiving mistakes with Feign Death. ⢠Warlock ā DoT and Shadow Bolt. Strong at all skill levels. Free mount saves gold. ⢠Paladin (Holy) ā Tank healing is straightforward: spam Holy Light, use cooldowns. Clear gameplay loop.
Moderate (Requires some game knowledge): ⢠Mage ā Must manage mana, threat, and positioning. Arcane rotation has a DPS optimization curve. ⢠Warrior (Protection) ā Tanking requires fight knowledge. Rage generation can be frustrating in low gear. ⢠Shaman (Restoration) ā Chain Heal targeting and totem management require practice. ⢠Priest (Holy) ā Diverse healing toolkit means knowing which spell to use when.
Advanced (High skill ceiling, rewarding mastery): ⢠Rogue ā Stealth openers, energy management, cooldown sequencing. PvP Rogue is one of the hardest specs to master but incredibly rewarding. ⢠Druid (Feral) ā Cat DPS rotation is the most complex melee rotation in TBC (powershifting for energy). Bear tanking requires awareness. ⢠Warrior (Arms PvP) ā Stance dancing, ability queueing, and target swapping make Arms Warrior one of the most mechanically demanding PvP specs.
Choose by Raid Demand: Who Gets Invited?
Understanding raid demand saves you from the frustration of being "benched" because your class is over-represented. Here's how many of each class a typical 25-man TBC raid wants:
High Demand (Multiple Spots): ⢠Warlock ā 4-5 per raid. Always wanted. Never sitting out. ⢠Restoration Shaman ā 3-4 per raid. The single most in-demand spec. ⢠Hunter ā 2-3 per raid. Easy to find a spot.
Moderate Demand (1-2 Spots): ⢠Mage ā 2-3 per raid. ⢠Holy Paladin ā 1-2 per raid. ⢠Rogue ā 1-2 per raid. ⢠Holy Priest ā 1-2 per raid. ⢠Protection Warrior ā 1 main tank per raid. ⢠Protection Paladin ā 1 off-tank per raid.
Limited Demand (1 Spot, Competitive): ⢠Shadow Priest ā Exactly 1 per raid. Essential but only one slot. ⢠Fury Warrior ā 1 per raid (melee slots are limited). ⢠Enhancement Shaman ā 1 per raid. ⢠Retribution Paladin ā 1 per raid. ⢠Elemental Shaman ā 1 per raid. ⢠Balance Druid ā 0-1 per raid. ⢠Feral Druid ā 0-1 per raid (often doubles as off-tank). ⢠Restoration Druid ā 1 per raid. ⢠Arms Warrior ā 0-1 per raid (for Blood Frenzy debuff).
Choose by PvP Strength
If PvP is your primary focus, class choice matters even more. Here's the TBC arena tier list:
S-Tier PvP Classes: ⢠Warrior (Arms) ā Mortal Strike is the single most impactful PvP ability. Warrior/Healer is a dominant comp at all ratings. ⢠Rogue (Subtlety) ā Shadowstep + Preparation. The scariest class to face in arena. Controls the pace of every fight. ⢠Warlock (SL/SL) ā Nearly unkillable with Soul Link + Siphon Life. DoT pressure while being tanky. ⢠Mage (Frost) ā Shatter combo burst, Ice Block immunity, maximum crowd control. ⢠Priest (Discipline) ā The best arena healer. Pain Suppression saves lives.
A-Tier PvP Classes: ⢠Druid (Resto) ā Excellent arena healer with HoTs, Bear Form for survival, and Cyclone CC. ⢠Hunter (BM) ā The Beast Within CC immunity is powerful. Pet pressure is real. ⢠Paladin (Holy) ā Bubble + strong healing. Less mobile than Priest/Druid but very survivable. ⢠Shaman (Resto) ā Earth Shield + Heroism. Competitive arena healer.
B-Tier PvP Classes: ⢠Enhancement Shaman ā Fun but squishy. Needs good teammates. ⢠Retribution Paladin ā Can work in battlegrounds, struggles in high-rated arena. ⢠Shadow Priest ā Offensive pressure PvP spec. Works in some comps.
Final Recommendation
Still can't decide? Here's the simple version:
⢠Want to always find a raid group? Play Warlock or Restoration Shaman. ⢠Want the easiest leveling experience? Play Hunter or Warlock. ⢠Want to dominate PvP? Play Rogue or Warrior. See our PvP builds page for the top arena specs. ⢠Want maximum flexibility? Play Druid ā you can literally do everything. ⢠Want to be the raid hero that everyone depends on? Play Protection Warrior (tanking) or Holy Paladin (healing). ⢠Want to see big numbers? Play Destruction Warlock or Arcane Fire Mage. Check our DPS rankings for detailed class comparisons.
Remember: the best class is the one you enjoy playing. TBC content is clearable with any raid composition, and the skill of the player matters far more than the theoretical DPS tier list. Pick what excites you, master it, and you will always find a group.
